Absolutely No Hidden Charges of Any Kind

In March of 2022, the Florida Legislature passed a bill widely known as the "Don't Say Gay law.” In 2023, six other anti-LGBTQ bills were passed, contributing to a growing hostile environment for educators and queer students alike, prohibiting the instruction of content related to sexuality and gender. The law was later expanded to prohibit school employees from using chosen names and preferred pronouns for students. On August 8th, 2024–days before I moved to Bulgaria to teach English to Bulgarian high schoolers–Bulgaria passed an anti-LGBTQ law that similarly forbids educators from sharing information related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

As an American educator and artist living in Bulgaria since September, I wasn’t sure what authority I had making art in response to Bulgaria’s political climate. But one night not long after the invite to participate in A/POLITICAL, I found myself joking with friends that somehow, after fourteen years, I ended up back in Florida, my home state.

The two share many other similarities beyond their current hostility towards the LGBTQ community: a coastline popular for tourists and investors, a fondness for luxury cars, and a population of conservative-leaning people vulnerable to misinformation and conspiratorial thinking.

Poking fun at the influx of foreigners drawn to buying cheap property in Bulgaria, this satirical video work is a fictional kitschy ad enticing Floridians to “buy into” Bulgaria by highlighting the parallels between the two.
