cornerstore
From 2015-2017, cornerstore was active in Chicago as an artist-run space. The apartment gallery ran out of a ten foot by ten foot room in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village from 2015-2016 and from 2016-2017 operated out of an even smaller room in Pilsen. Occassionally, a hallway closet, living room, or some other untapped nook was utilized as installation space.
Over the course of two years, we presented twelve exhibitions to the Chicago public with a focus on sculpture. Below you can find archival documentation and flyers from each of our exhibitions.
As cornerstore’s organizer, the works on display were my roommates for weeks at a time (grateful to my human roommate’s tolerance). In many ways, living amongst the art during these shows marked the beginning of my own journey as a maker - it showed me how space is often an integral part of the art itself. Thank you to every artist, writer, curator, culture worker, musician, and stray who attended, contributed to, drank ice-cold PBRs and chatted about the work on display during cornerstore’s lifespan.
