cornerstore

From 2015-2017, cornerstore was active as an artist-run exhibition space in Chicago, Illinois. The apartment gallery operated out of a ten-by-ten-foot room in Ukrainian Village and later out of an even smaller room in Pilsen. Occasionally, a hallway closet, the living room, and dining room were activated as additional installation space.

Over the course of two years, we presented twelve exhibitions to Chicago’s public. We were particularly focused on presenting sculptural work and installations. Below you will find archival documentation and flyers from each of our exhibitions.

As founder and housemate of cornerstore, I drank my morning coffee inside the gallery every morning. This living besides the art was a key moment in my life and gave rise to what had only been a theory up until initiating this project  - cornerstore revealed to me how crucial interiority is to arranging and viewing work on display. The interiority one is working with changes how the work behaves. For this reason, I believe cornerstore was a crucial and lively extension of the art it contained.

Thank you to every artist, writer, curator, culture worker, musician, and my roommates and friends who came to see and support the work during cornerstore’s lifespan.
