Eau Doom: A Scent Board Game

Eau Doom is a speculative fiction olfactory board game, positing a future in which humans have finally brought catastrophe upon the planet and all plants have gone nearly extinct. The game relies on cooperative play to identify different plant scents in order to preserve them before they're gone forever.

The game seeks to demonstrate the idea that smell can be an important addition to our collective toolkit for survival if we prioritize strengthening it. The vision is for Eau Doom to function as a tool people can use to train their noses and develop critical thinking around their sense of smell, as well as to begin thinking about scent as a strategy for fighting against planetary destruction.

The gameboard features illustrations of remote and abandoned places throughout the world, signaling these as places we can turn to once urban areas can no longer support robust plant life. Each spot players can land on is signified by a plant rooted in soil.

The gameboard has spots for 12 scent vials, which means it includes the original six scents players are sniffing for and six additional “decoys” to make the pursuit harder. The scents can be held in any sealable vessels, each vessel then being randomly placed atop a roman numeral in the center orange circle of the board.
